Gorky Park Branding by Anastasia Genkina

  • The aim for this ice cream store is to connect the historical value with modern recognition through design was achieved by developing patterns, inspired by key symbols of the Park's life.
  • Each pattern corresponds with one of the size flavours as the tastes of the icecream and cone becomes a memory of childhood for several generations insinuating that their recipe is very traditional.

Neat Confections

  • I really like the combination of graphics with the colours and patterns on the packaging of the chocolate.
  • It is designed to reflect the various notes and flavours of the chocolate which is a really interesting concept that I am researching more into for my project.
  • I really like how there is a certain level of consistency with the design/layout of each of the packagings even though the graphics, colours and patterns change each time. (crucial for developing a visual language)
  • They hired designer Ferro Concrete to brand their new bakery concept.
  • The deserts inspired on so many levels beyond food and beauty was the first to come to mind.
  • They consider themselves as "fruit matchmakers" but they seem to have matched alot more than fruit to create these pieces of food art.
  • He generated a comprehensive identity system that was appliec across multiple brand touch points, including store design, interior, website and packaging for the launch of fruute's mini tart revolution.
  • The stores concept is based on triangles which show up on the packaging.
  • Shelves hold the chocolate bars sideways revealing their colourful edges and is displayed like artwork.
  • The recipes of each of the chocolates are translated in every design for each specific flavour and the wall is literally transformed into eye candy full of details.
  • The design reflects the flavour of the chocolate as well as encapturing the feelings in which the customer feels when enjoying the bar of chocolate.

Pantone Menu Inspiration

Materials Talk: Central Saint Martins Library (Materials Research)

  • I really enjoyed the talk as they went through various processes of printing and production as well as tlaked about the broad range of materials and paper stocks available to be able to replicate your idea physically. I really liked  they provided samples of various techniques and how it can be applied to real publications and magazines that have been effective.
  • What I particularly enjoyed about learning about the various materials is how you can really take advantage of a certain property of the material (e.g metallic paper can be printed on to create a more metallic/iidescent ink texture).
  • They really highlighted the importance of the choice of materials and how it really does effect how it communicates to the reader and how they choose to interact with the piece.
  • One of my favourite pieces from what they talked about were the more unique and original pieces where people could personalize a certain thing in a magazine. (e.g the watch on the back cover could be changed to read a specific date and time they choose)

OWT Creative Issue 13 Reprocess

Brochure/Zine/Catalogue/Publication Formats

  • Just by simply folding and cutting the paper, they have made an ordinary brochure look a little more exciting. I want to experiment with this kind of format or maybe experiment more with cutting and folding to make things more unique and intriguing which will in turn attract someone to pick it up and look through it.
  • I think this is a really interesting approach to a packaging for publications. the way something is packaged says alot about the company themselves and in this case it could insinuate good organization or good relationship and communication.
  • The jigsaw like packaging also adds a lot to the collection of publications.
  • This was an interesting project that i came across that is not directly linked to my project (but could come in handy)
  • I really liked how they packaged and labelled intangible/non-existent things like "pollution dissolver."
  • it is a very onceptual idea that isn't supposed to function and exist but used to raise awareness and forces the audience to question "what if" this existed, would certain issues still be prevalent and existent? What issues would there be? Would it fundamentally be a perfect world if things like this existed?
  • "Amado" by Hyatt is a Mexican artisan bakery and candy boutique specialized in typical regional products characterized by their flavours, textures and colours.
  • The design has strived to bring together both the romantic and classic spirits of Amado Nervo's poetry and the modernist style.
  • I particularly like the sophisticated idea in which the graphic features translates the visual language into a contemporary innovative solution.
  • They are a mexican pastry shop that offers special confections.
  • Their handmade cookies and pastries are made with varied organic spices and fruity scents that are made to compliment any wine flavour.
  • Perfection is the main character of the brand proposal. The quality of the product is reflected by the pureness of the packaging.
  • I really like how the silver chrome surfaces in every piece allows the confections to stand out. The slight touch of the neon pastel colour on the labels also adds a certain warmth and functionality.

Handcrafted Jelly Beans

  • '100% Jellybeans with feelings'
  • They produce two different tastes: Sad and Envy.
  • e.g. Sad is made of 50gr of tears, a pinch of bad luck, and 20 hours of stress.
  • Each artwork of the packaging visualizes the feelings of the tastes.

Compartes Chocolate Packaging

  • I really like how different they formatted they're zines/brochures/publications. They take an ordinary thing and revamp it to make it more unique and more interesting which makes it more appealling to an audience.
  • I particularly like the mixing of materals and paper stocks as it makes you almost want to touch it and flick through it.
  • I feel that maybe experimenting with some folding techniques could be interesting to see what could be made out of simple folds. The folds make a more interactive experience for an audience which is something that I am aiming for in my project.

Icons/Graphics Research

  • I really like how they have predetermined a common theme for the graphics (the circle) which makes it more recognizable as a collection of icons/graphics.
  • They also made it more cohesive by using the same line thickness for every icon.
  • A rebrand of popular milkshake bar Shakeaway, based on the concept of combinations.
  • The company name is split into 'shake' and 'away' to represent this, with the two-colour patterns it sits on symbolising botht eh mixture of the milkshake and the combination of ingredients.
  • The mixture of colour and pattern becomes the main visual identity of the rebrand.
  • Five colours are combined with five different patterns to give fifty combinations that symbolize the variety of milkshake flavours you can create.
  • I really like how this visual language is generated to fully reflect the concept of the milkshake shop. The flavours are ultimately reflected by the packaging of the drink which is something that I feel would be interesting to incorporate into my idea as it is very multi-sensory.
  • Recently he has redesigned the packaging of his perfumes to link the perfumes with colour.
  • The bold patterns and colours of the special packaging is a dramatic change of pace from the solid colours of his previous traditional packaging.
  • Because i'm focusing on a very futuristic multisensory experience, I thought it would be an interesting idea to translate something that only requires a singular sense into a multi sensory experience.
  • I really like the aesthetics of a pantone swatch especially because theres a specific 'colour ratio' and 'code' for each of the colours adding a very logical dimension to colour. Because coours depend on our sight perception alone i thought by using this concept/design to create a menu couuld be an interesting approach.
  • By using these pantone swatches as a menu/way of ordering by amalgmating some textures/colours/patterns to encapture the other senses could be an interesting approach to a multisensory menu design/format/layout.
  • One advice they really stressed upon during the talk was "less is more."
  • For example, I really like how they utilized the grain and the roughness of the material above as an element for the business cards. The design is simple with a couple of words, however, the detail from the material really makes it intersting and elevates the look of the business cards.
  • What I also noticed about some of the invitations they had showed us is the use of 2 or 3 colours to vary the colour palette slightly. I really think this is an effective way of making it slightly more personalized and unique and more fun and interesting at the same time.
  • I was looking to create a collection of catalogues/zines as a final outcome and decided to research into how designers have made each component of a collection more cohesive.
  • At the begining of this project, they set out to run with 12 issues. However, after completing the 12 issues, they created this 13th issue called 'reprocess.'
  • Submissions from the OWT back catalogue form a background layer of pre-existing themes, ready to be manipulated and reprocessed by new work.
  • "This changes the context and makes new interpretations while initiating serendipitous collaborations. The zine features contributions from approximately 100 people.
  • They stuck to six-colour riso printing which I feel adds a certain cohesiveness  between each zine (as no two zines in the run of 150 are the same).
  • The use of the logo in the bottom right hand corner also labels it and makes it as part of a collection rather than a stand alone piece.
  • I really like how theseicons are drawn with thick short strokes that give the icon a more playful look. The rounded and tapered lines also adds towards this more playful approach rather than sharp thin lines that could be used for a more serious icon.
  • I particularly like the icons which obtain the secondary level of the crumbs or the motion lines which adds something a little more exciting to a plain and simple icon.
