Eat More Pantone: Mia Di Domenico

This project is aimed to study Pantone colours combined with different types of foods. She has divided it into four sections: breakfast, lunch, tea break and dinner. Within each section she has matched Pantone Colours (coated and uncoated) with tones of foods analysed.

2014 Calender New Flavours by NEARLY NORMAL

  • The fruits are made in a very playful but geometric way that I think is very interesting.
  • I really like the amalgmation of colours that are both abstract but true to the fruit itself making it very recognizeable.

The Brink by Keira Rathbone

Pastelhood x Desperatebutnotserious by Isabella Vacchi

Dodge the Lunch - Tibor Galamb (Photog) & Jolita Lenktaitye (Art Direction)

Sun of a Beach by Rifky Fadhil

  • An interesting way of packaging a collection of small books or zines or catalogues.

Roschterra F/W 15 Catalogue

  • Ana Mirats takes a very geometric approach to the presenttion and the design of her catalogue which is something that caught my eye.
  • Her attention to detail (especially the embossing on the front sleeve) adds towards the simplistic design and adds a nice touch that makes the user want to interact with the catalogue. The built in sleeve like design is a really nice idea and I think I want to experiment with something similar for my catalogue/zine/promotional booklet.
  • I feel that her design is successful due to the narrowed colour scheme that she remains loyal to throughout the whole catalogue.

Andy Wolf Eyewear Lookbook 2011 by Julia Klinger

Ehmotion by Edgar Hernandez

  • I really like how well he has combined image and text together which i soething that has proven to be a challenge.
  • He has done various compilations and compositions with type and image which illustrate his interesting choice of colour and tones. For example the composition with 'have no fear.' The image is predominantly dark which evokes a certain level of mystery which does compliment the text.
  • The composition with "sigh no more" is quite bright and fun which parallels the idea of optimism etc.

Interesting Formats

  • An intersting format for an invitation/ticket.
  • I really like how it serves as a multipurpose item which makes it more interesting and intriguing to the user.

Natural Patterns - Swatch Pattern Research

Promotional Pack: Packaging Research

  • I was really interesting in designing a 'packaging folder' for my publications. I really like the professional and business-like approach which elevates the product.
  • If I experiment with this, I want to try experimenting with different materials and maybe incorporate some acetate/transparent sheets.
  • Because three publications make one promotional pack, I want to include all three publications in one packaging and this will be a very suitable design and structure to hold publications like these.

Pattern and Colour Theory: Textiel Museum

PUR designed by Bond for Finnish Health Store

  • Bonds approach is a blend of sans-serif typography that leverages a typographical quirk, earthy material detail, iconography, a pastel colour palette and still life photography, delivers a strong communicative resolution of reliability, nature, accessibility and effectiveness delivered in an interesting way.
  • It is evident that the graphical comoponents reinforce a environmental experience and are utilised effectively to convey the value of the environment in their company.
  • I feel that their use of type is also crucial in developing their recognizable brand. Their uppercase sans-serif letterforms are bold and robust which evokes a more reliable and practical feel to the audience.
  • The soft pastel colour palette makes it more welcoming and adds a contemporary approach to their brand.

Odd Pears - Shades of Beans

Book/Publication Binding

  • I really like how you can be creative with the binding of a zine which is something that I think I want to amalgamate into my project.
  • However, what is the most difficult part, is selecting one that will compliment the content as well as the brand that I am aiming or.
  • What I find really interesting about the publication above is how the format of the book itself serves as both the cover of the book as well as a 'package for it.' I think I could possibly incorporate this idea somehow and maybe have a fold out cover that could double as a packaging.

FIlm Box Promotional Experience Kit by Russell Shaw

  • Film Box is a photography lab by photographers, for photographers. They wanted to create a direct mail campaign that would celebrate the human, tangible process of film photography. A highly tactile package was designed to ship to photographers around the nation contain letters, mini newspapers, coupons, film canisters, notebooks, posters, etc.

Seed & Sow On Identity by Emily Gwynne

  • Identity and branding option for homegrown herb and plant company Seed & Sow On
  • I really like the clean layout of all the design components as it really compliments the company and what they believe in which is crucial when trying to develop identity that communicates what they are about.

Negativland Promotional Kit by Gloria Wu

Href by Pelayo Romero

  • He has generated the images by manipulating css and html files to experiment and generate the graphics.
  • The href attribute specifies the URl of the page the link goes to. If the hrf atribute is not present, the <a> tag is not a hyperlink.
  • I really like how he has taken such a minute focal point and perspective and generated a whole project surrounding this concept.

Nick Barclay - Movie Posters using only circles

  • Evidently, the size of the circles plays a large role in how recognizable each of the posters are. e.g. the smaller red circles = dracula. but the larger to black outlined circles = harry potter. \
  • However, it can be argued that some of the posters do not utilize colour very well to make it more recognizable.

I really like the minimalist approach she has taken with the photography of the still life. The changing of the background colour also adds adds a nice touch as it places a greater emphasis on the colour of the subject. The project is based on a careful observation of the individual colours of food taken with professionalism and a touch of irony.

  • They took the traditional image of frut, as often seen in still life, and added a twist by using vibrant colours and number patterns on the inside. The patterns correspond to each caledner month and are designed to reflect the repetition and patterns that are found in nature. (reminds me of the fibonacci sequence/spiral)
  • Using a very tactile illustrative approach, they feel that they're fruits are way better because they are perfectly ripened and stay like that the whole year round!

I really like the conceptual feel of her style of work. Using a simple colour palette she is able to incorporate a minimalist/simplistic approach that allows the audience to focus on the subject of her piece. What i find really intriguing about her use of a typewriter is that a typewriter tends to produce pieces of text that are 2 dimensional, but her pieces transforms this flat 2 dimensional piece to a 3D piece that is more dynamic and obtains and creates an energy that is transfixing.

  • Online Magazine Issue 1/ Sticky Buns
  • I really like how she explores the concept of color schemes which is reflected through the choice of objects in each of the images as well as the colors that are involved with an individual image.
  • The organized/arrange feel adds a simplistic and minimalist touch that I am aiming for in my project and I think that it adds a lot to her images and the concept she is aiming for.
  • Vacchi continues with the minimalist/simplistic style in her next project where she deconstructs food and photographs it like a still life image.
  • I really like how she considers color in her compositions and sticks to a specific color scheme in each individual image which makes the image more cohesive in a colorful way.
  • I also really like her choice of shapes and how she utilizes triangles, circle and rectangles to compose each of her images. i.e. the resulting dish is always in a circle etc.
  • What really attracted me to these photos are their choice of color along with the quirky compositions of each of the images.
  • They stick to a pastel color palette with small pops of colors with props such as the clothing and the cutlery on the table which I think works really well.
  • I think that choosing a color palette for my photographs will definitely be the best approach and starting point to be able to create some successful images.

Tree Specimen Book by Will Yates-Johnson

  • Will Yates-Johnson created this project in collaboration with Julinka Ebhardt. During one fo their workshops in the countryside, they noticed that they didn't know the names of many of the trees surrounding them.
  • They began collecting photographs and documents of as manytree specimens as they could find and produced a small book of 22 specimens listing their names and its classification.
  • I really like how simple the book is laid out and it has a common theme throughout the book which makes it a more interesting collection of images.
  • The formating of the book makes it almost like a visual list which fits very well with its content.
  • For my project, I have decided to generate a 'promotional pack' for my company 'QNSTRKT.' In this promotional pack I want to include catalogues/information books/zines that tell the audience about who we are, what we do and why we do what we do. I want to somehow translate this simplistic format into my project by maybe selecting a few key words for each of the zines and photograph images that illustrate it visually.
  • I really like how there is a defined relationship between each of the books and makes it more of a collection rather than a singular book itself.
  • The very simple format and design makes it really engaging and makes  the reader want to pick it up and to find out what its about.
  • I really like how these posters are structured and fold to open and reveal the message inside. It is a really interesting approach as it almost mimics a book/publication with a title/phrase and then once its open it reveals the 'content.'
  • I decided to research into various patterns that have been generated with reference to different things. e.g. rock patterns.
  • Because I am in the process of designing some swatches for the 'Qnstrkt' Printer I thought it would be suitable to look into patterns that are generated. I also came across some holographic patterns created which look really interesting.
  • However, for mine I think that I want to experiment with same paints or computer graphics to generate my swatches.
  • The unique character of the TextieMuseum is the combination iwht its production and development facility the textielLab.In the identity the focus is on visualizing the combination of these two characters of the institution.
  • The basic icon of the institute represents the T,M and L that are overlapping. By multiplying the letters at different opacities and colour combinations they have created a really interesting identity that I feel works really effectively to communicate how integrated they work together.
  • The dynamic character of the structure and system allows various implementations of patterns on several parts of the identity. Such as staionary, packaging, website, etc. Making this visual link between all the consumer touch points definitely creates a unique identity that becomes identifiable.
  • The complete colour palette is fundamentally based on only 5 hues that are then overlapped at different intensities generating the various shades in between.

Piece of Cake by Feeldesain

  • I have really been inspired by minimalist still life photography lately and I really like how the simple use of colours highlights the focal point of an image.
  • I found some of these photographer who have directed and composed some interesting images that really stand out. I also particularly like things arranged "neatly" as it gives it a very structured effect that works very well in juxtaposing the playful pastel colours.
  • I wanted to find a new and interesting way of binding a catalogue/zine to make it more interesting and intriguing.
  • I particularly liked the japanese binding technique especially when various shapes and new patterns are created with the thread. I really like how the stitch binding can be both very professional or make it look very handmade.
  • Promotional kit for band, Negativland
  • I really like how she didn't take the conventional approach to a promotional kit and she fully recreated something that was suitable in conveying her message.
  • I really like the vintage and retro feel of the box, almost as if its stepping into a different era of time which is always important in considering when trying to create a consumer experience with a product.
  • I really like how he determined a criteria prior to designing his posters which thne became his theme for the posters. His posters are almost like challenges for the audience to try and decipher the posters to figure out which movie he is referencing.
  • The use of form and colour is some of the most important aspects of his project which he pays close attention to. e.g. 101 dalmations.
  • His meticulous choice of colour and form plays a large role in how easily someone is able ot make the connection between the movie and the posters.
  • However, some of the designs are fairly vague and only if you really know the movie would you be able to figure out which one he is referencing.
  • I think the simplicity of the shots adds towards the concept of a pantone swatch which makes it a very well rounded project.
  • For my project I was also thinking of using pantone swatches in some way, but maybe use its style to depict textures and tastes and not only colours.
  • Keira Rathbone's uique art explores the often forgotten creative tool of the typewriter.
  • Her works involves using a typewriter as a drawing and mark making instrument to create pieces there are complex but absorbing for an audience.
  • This project explores the typewriter as a provocative medium that challenges our perceptions of technology and creative process.
  • Her photographic passion is for still-life and stylised food phtography, bringing ordinary objects to life and capturing them in a unique perspective.

  • I really like how he merges geometric lines with photography to make a mixed medium piece. It makes it look less like two layers to an image which I think is really interesting.
  • HIs careful choice of colors also compliments the poster as it is a very playful but minimalist design. The playful message together with this also makes it a very intriguing piece.

Astrobrights Packaging for Polytrade

  • Hong Kong's design studio, BLOW, has redefined packaging with astrobrights paper. The exploration was brought about with the possibility of using astrobrights paper for Polytrade (a paper distributor and printer in Hong Kong).
  • They now design packaging for various companies and products such as tea, mooncakes and chocolates because of its success. The packaging above was developed and used to package an assortment of teas.
  • I really like the geometric quality of the packaging as it  plays a large role in how a customer first interacts with a product.

The Martian Chronicles - Dawn & Dusk Editions

  • Various components of the publication can be torn out and folded into objects.
  • I really like how interactive they have made this publication. They really considered the interactive side of the publication which I think is really important. Involving the audience at this level elevates the publication itself and makes the publication somewhat more 'luxurious,'

Village Cafe - Graphics

  • I also really like how this packaging folds up and it is held together by a simple slip in tab.
  • The explosive nature of the packaging makes it more exciting as you open the packaging to reveal the publications which could also add a certain level of excitement and surprise for the customer which is also an interesting approach to experiment with.
  • However, this may be difficult to packaging all 3 publications in one as it may be difficult to close and hold it all together (which is fundamentally the purpose of a packaging)
  • Piece of cake still font is a self initiated typographic project that explores the connection between type and still life. Luda Galchenko is a multidisciplinary graphic designer and art director who has specialized in visual communcation,
  • I really like the style and the way in which these are photographed and layouted and styled. Each image individually is very interesting which definitely makes it very interesting.
  • Each image is creatively laid out and it is always different which is important in keeping the project interesting. And I like how she has made a connectio between still life and typography.

Steve Gallagher

Goody Bag Loot by Decor8

  • My initial idea was to bind my catalogue zines in a similar way to the one shown above.
  • I really like the technical/mechanical/industrial look of the metal binding which really compliments my qnstrkt printer which is important when trying to develop a recognizable identity.
  • For my 3 different catalogues, I want to bind them in three different ways to differentiate between the catalogues/ Maybe by chagning up the pattern of the stitches or the style. of binding.
  • I also particularly like the choice of colours he uses throughout the 'newspaper.'
  • He sticks to the dull pastel colour palette which makes the complete newspaper more cohesive.
